Hello, Long Beach Unified Community.

Today is a time for pause and gratitude as we celebrate the final phasing in of students who have selected to return for in-person instruction. While not all students are returning to classrooms this year, our schools have been energized by having students in classrooms, hallways and in the spaces that have been important to them on campus. I have heard from many families about the importance of having a choice about their student’s instructional program this year. What is right for one student is not right for all students, and I have been pleased to hear that having a choice meant a lot to you as a community.

I can’t say often enough that it has been teamwork, persistence and dedication that got our 菠菜网lol正规平台 community to this point. School office staff members have worked tirelessly throughout the pandemic to be of support to families with technology, enrollment and connection to resources. As school offices officially reopened this week, I have heard staff express their own excitement about seeing students and families in person. As you visit school buildings or our central office, please expect things to take a little longer as we continue to follow strict health and safety protocols on behalf of our staff and students.

Our community health data continues to be encouraging. In fact, this week’s adjusted case rate is 1.9 positive cases per 100,000. This can be attributed to our community’s commitment to following health and safety protocols and to getting as many people vaccinated as possible. Some of our youth are even taking an active stance in encouraging their peers to get vaccinated as well. The good news about our community’s health is that it enables us to plan for safe, in-person end-of-year celebrations such as high school graduation ceremonies, and elementary and middle school promotional ceremonies.

This week, we had the opportunity to share the work of our 菠菜网lol正规平台 team with Dr. Debra Duardo, Los Angeles County Superintendent. Dr. Duardo joined us on Monday to visit Grant Elementary School and Grant’s Child Development Center. She left with a full heart, having seen firsthand how comfortable our little ones in pre-school and our elementary students seemed in their learning spaces. In her closing remarks, she praised the school district’s commitment to health and safety, schools’ very intentional outreach to families throughout the pandemic, the thought and care that was put into students’ return to school and our aspirations for the future. We were proud to share our lessons learned and our vision for the future with Dr. Duardo.

During the month of May, most of the updates that you will need will come directly from your school teams. Schools will provide specific information about end-of-year activities and summer learning opportunities for students, including intervention, credit recovery and enrichment. Schools will also share a number of social emotional supports that will be available throughout the summer. Please be on the lookout for a summer filled with ways that your student can participate.

Your patience and perseverance have helped us to reach this moment of reflection, with all schools now providing in-person learning. We look forward to continued progress, and we thank everyone who supports this important work.

Sincerely,

Jill
